The Board of Trustees

Every state and state-integrated school or kura in New Zealand has a board that governs it.

The board’s role is to oversee the governance of its school or kura and to ensure that everything that needs to be done gets done – legally, ethically, and as well as possible in the best interests of its students.

The board is responsible for school strategic and policy direction, ensuring student safety, quality education for students, and for overseeing management of curriculum, staff, property, finances and administration and also for the monitoring and reviewing against targets to inform planning.

The board is the employer of all staff, including the principal, and sets the overall strategic direction for the school or kura. The principal is the board’s ‘chief executive’ and manages the day to day operations of the school or kura in line with the board’s direction and policies.

Further information about the roles and responsibilities of the Board of Trustees is linked HERE. For more information about BOT policies head to this page.

Meetings and Minutes

The RAS Board holds regular meetings through the year. These are generally on ********. All dates can be found on the RAS public calendar.

The meetings are not public meetings, but they are “open to the public”. This means that you are welcome to attend as an observer although you may not have speaking rights. Some items on the agenda may need to be discussed in private.

You will be asked to leave for these parts.Staff may be asked to speak at board meetings to share information about particular areas of interest, e.g. curriculum, unit holders, assessment data, etc. Louisa will contact you if you are asked to speak. The Minutes of Board meetings are published as soon as they are confirmed. The link to these is below.

Contacting the Board

It’s important for staff to understand and use the correct processes for communicating with the Board of Trustees.
Processes:
  • If you have a concern or complaint you need to work through the correct process. See the Concerns and Complaints page.
  • The Staff representative role is the same as all other trustees – they do not speak “on behalf of the staff”.
  • All communication to the Board must go through the official email address which is boardoftrustees@raglanarea.school.nz
  • Staff should not contact individual Trustees.
